This week New York’s New Museum of Contemporary Art will opens its major survey of the work of Hans Haacke — the German-born, 83-year-old artist known for works such as “Cowboy With a Cigarette” (1990) and  “Gift Horse” (2014) — with a conversation with the artist himself. Running from this Thursday, October 24, to January 26, 2020, Hans Haacke: All Connected is notably the first large U.S. museum survey of Haacke’s work in 33 years and will feature more than 30 of his pieces created throughout his lengthy career.

The conversation with Haacke that kicks off the show will be moderated by the exhibition’s co-curators, Massimiliano Gioni and Gary Carrion-Murayari. The talk will likely explore Haacke’s extensive history of creating what the New Museum describes as “kinetic art, environmental art, Conceptual art, and institutional critique.” It promises to be a lively talk from an artist known for strong opinions and speaking his truth to power and his mercurial relationship with museums over the years. That’s part of what makes Haacke’s work fascinating, though; he’s been nothing if not defiant. As he once put it in a Hyperallergic interview: “If you see it as such a critique, then that’s your interpretation.” Ticket prices, on the other hand, are not up for interpretation; they’ll be $15 for general admission, $10 for museum members.

When: Thursday, October 24, 2019, at 7 pm (conversation; $15 general admission/$10 museum members); through January 26, 2020 (exhibition)
Where: The New Museum (235 Bowery, Lower East Side, Manhattan)
