We covered Nike’s colorful new line of kicks earlier this year, and now the company is doing us one better: They’re making a sustainable shoe.
In line with Nike’s “Move to Zero” plan, which offers a five-pronged path to powering their plants with renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions and diverting manufacturing detritus away from landfills—the new Space Hippie shoe is made from “space junk,” i.e., transformed factory waste.
“The manufacturing, which employs about 85 to 90 percent recycled polyester Space Waste Yarn, recycled Nike ZoomX foam and Crater Foam (a blend of standard Nike foams and Nike Grind Rubber), results in a radical design with a low carbon footprint,” Nike writes.
Nike is releasing the shoes, which come in four styles, on Thursday on its SNKRS and SNEAKERS apps, and in some retailers.
