We (Heart) These NYC Shirts From NY Nico’s Latest Challenge

From his personal mission to watch every essential New York film to his Best New York Accent contest, filmmaker Nicolas Heller, aka New York Nico, has been seeking to lift the spirits of Gothamites throughout the pandemic by hosting a series of city-centric challenges.

His latest: The Best New York Shirt challenge, which he is working on alongside Alumni. The goal: Spark New York City pride with design. Designs that “best define New York in 2020” will be selected by a panel of judges, and a public vote will then be held to select the final three, which will be produced for charity.

The fine print:

—All designs must be new. (Aka, no Milton Glaser “I <3 New York” riffs.)

—The design must work on a white T-shirt, where it will be screenprinted with two colors on one side only.

—Artwork dimensions: 14” x 17”.

—Active and existing brands may not enter.

Entries are being accepted until 10 a.m. (Eastern) tomorrow, April 29. To submit a design, share it on Instagram and tag @NewYorkNico, @AlumniofNY and use hashtag #BestNYShirt.

My two submissions for the @newyorknico @alumniofny #bestnyshirt contest. NY pride is wearing your street on your chest and knowing that every other New Yorkers’ street is on there, together with yours. Both are variations of the same idea: to show every single street in the 5 boroughs. First option is at first glance, a bunch of static, but upon closer inspection, it’s a list of every NYC street broken down by borough, filling the entire printable area of the shirt. This will be tricky to print but it’s doable. Detail in frame 2. Second option is a street map with a nod to Kool G Rap. Detail on final frame.

Here’s my entry for @newyorknico and @alumniofny #bestnyshirt challenge. New York City has always been stereotypically depicted as “rude” “hustle” and “grind”. But for those who grew up here, or have lived here long enough, we know that its simply not true..(okay cept maybe for the hustle part) New York to me, has always stood for kindness and love. And when shit gets real, NYC pulls it TOGETHER. The colors are a nod to my home borough flag colors(Queens) and the facewear we’ve been wearing on the reg.
